Session 28: Giants, More Giants, And The Thing In The Cellar

4th day of Winter, Year 185 of Vecna
With the Guardians barricaded in the meeting room and the giants surrounding the room, they quickly debated whether to stick around for the fight, or escape through the chimney. Heian skillfully threw a grappling hook up through it, so they could get out quickly. But Henry insisted they could do it, and told the others they were staying.

Soon the door was battered down, and giants swarmed into the room, both through the door and through the room where the dire bear had slept. All in all nine giants came for them. 6 regular giants, a shaman, the leader (a monstrously large and fat giant wielding the biggest crossbow they had ever seen) and one which was very adept at throwing stones. The fight was long and fairly hard. But due to great positioning and the tough shell Henry wears, they eventually killed all the giants.

Still, there were other giants around, that much they knew, and the young ones, they previously had seen in the bedroom area were gone, presumably to find help.

The Guardians quickly checked out the Main Hall, but decided to return to the Meeting Room, there had to be a secret door.

And they found it. Behind was a staircase down, and a chest which turned out to have a lot of hollow bones used for scrollcases. One of the cases had a note in it.

“Dear Nosra. You will soon be approached by orc emissaries who wish to mount a large scale attack on Presidio. Not only will you agree and offer all your giants, but you will also send word to your many cousins around, convincing them that this time, you will win over the humans. If they hesitate, inform that both the frost and fire giants of the Silver Peaks will join the war as well. The stone giants probably too. Oh yeah, we will need you to bring your special friend, the one you keep down in the cellar. It is also imperative that the orcs think they are in command. At some point, we will send word to you, and you must obey the orders without hesitation. Failure will earn you an eternity of torment for you and your wife.
Please eat this message at once.”

Going down the stairs, the Guardians took a short break, then continued. They quickly ended up starring through bars into a huge arena-like room with iron spears on all walls and columns. Quietly sneaking into the room, they made it across, before finding another door with bars. Unfortunately it was locked, and Henry had just woken the Iron Dragon living here. The Dragon, which was adept at teleporting, turning invisible and breathing lightning engaged the Guardians as they were making their way to another exit, and while they did well to handle it initially, it clawed it way back into the fight and soon things looked very bad for the Guardians of Athas (consencus on name???). As the fight dragged on, the Guardians started to drop left and right. Even the moral cheers of Garix could not keep them up on their feet. But somehow, they managed to hang on, stay alive and kill the grizzly beast.

At this point, Jelastra was very, very tired. But there is no rest for the wicked, so after finding a little treasure, the Guardians continued their search of the area, which turned into natural caves to the north. Henry stumbled over a hole in wall and spotted an umberhulk, and at this point, finally agreed that they needed some rest. They did go a bit south first, but stopped at a large door, because it sounded like something very big was moving behind it. They figured that maybe the giants left alive upstairs didn't know the secret entrance, or maybe the giants were too scared of the dragon. Either way, they decided to take a chance and return to the dragon's cave rest in it, hoping the umberhulk(s) wouldn't go near that area either....
